6 Ways to Uncover Your Core Values

Hello reader,

Welcome back to Compassion Corner Counseling's weekly newsletter! This month, we're diving into the transformative concept of core values and how they shape our lives in profound ways.

At the heart of who we are lie our core values – those deeply-held beliefs and principles that guide our thoughts, decisions, and actions. Whether we're aware of them or not, our values influence every aspect of our lives, from the relationships we cultivate to the goals we pursue.

But why are core values so important, you may wonder? Well, imagine a ship without a compass. Lost at sea, it drifts aimlessly, lacking direction or purpose. Similarly, without a clear understanding of our values, we may find ourselves adrift in life, unsure of where we're going or why. Identifying our core values offers us a compass for navigating life's journey. When we live in alignment with our values, we experience greater clarity, authenticity, and fulfillment. Our decisions become more intentional, our actions more meaningful, and our relationships more authentic.

But how can you uncover your core values? Let's break it down into simple steps:

  1. Reflect on Past Experiences: Take some time to think about moments in your life when you felt deeply fulfilled, alive, or aligned with your true self. For example, you might recall a time when you volunteered at a local shelter and felt a profound sense of purpose and connection.
  2. Identify Values in Those Moments: Consider what values were present during those experiences. Were there themes or principles that stood out to you? In the volunteering example, you might identify values such as compassion, community, and service.
  3. Write Them Down: Make a list of the values that resonate with you. Don't worry about getting it perfect – this is a brainstorming exercise. Jot down words like compassion, community, service, empathy, etc.
  4. Ponder and Prioritize: Reflect on your list and consider which values are most important to you. Which ones do you want to prioritize in your life? Perhaps after reflection, you realize that compassion and authenticity are your top priorities.
  5. Let Them Guide You: Allow your core values to serve as a compass for your decisions and actions. Keep them in mind as you navigate through life, and let them guide you toward a more authentic and fulfilling existence. For instance, when faced with a career decision, you might ask yourself if the option aligns with your values of compassion and authenticity.

May you embrace the journey of self-discovery with an open heart and a curious mind.
