3 Reasons Why Change is So Difficult

Hello reader,

Last week, we talked about embracing change as a natural part of life. But let’s face it—change can be hard. Even when we know it’s coming or recognize that it’s necessary, we often struggle with it. Have you ever wondered why that is?

The truth is, our brains are wired to prefer routine and familiarity. When everything stays the same, we feel safe and secure. Change, on the other hand, triggers our survival instincts, causing feelings of anxiety and fear. Even when the change is positive—like a promotion, a new home, or an exciting opportunity—it can still feel unsettling.

Think about the last time you faced a big transition. Did you feel excited, but also a little nervous? That’s because our brains don’t just process change logically; they respond emotionally. Whether it’s moving to a new city, starting a new job, or adjusting to a shift in personal relationships, we tend to resist the unknown because it feels risky.

Here are some common reasons why change feels difficult:

  • Fear of the unknown: We don’t know what’s ahead, which makes us anxious.
  • Disruption of routine: Even small changes can upset our sense of stability.
  • Emotional attachment: Letting go of the familiar can feel hard, even when change is positive.

Recognizing that resistance to change is natural can help us approach it with more self-compassion. It’s okay to feel a mix of emotions, and just acknowledging that is a step toward managing transitions in a healthy way.

Next week, we’ll dive into practical tools for coping with change.
