How to Find Gratitude in Hard Times

Finding Light in Dark Times

Hello,

As we continue our November journey, let’s talk about the challenge—and importance—of gratitude in stressful times. When life feels heavy, gratitude might feel distant or even impossible to access, but it can actually help us to feel more balanced and resilient.

Gratitude is NOT Toxic Positivity

When we talk about gratitude in tough times, we’re not suggesting that you ignore the very real, sometimes painful emotions you might be experiencing. Practicing gratitude isn’t about pretending everything is fine; instead, it’s about acknowledging those difficult feelings while also making room for something positive. This balance prevents gratitude from feeling like “toxic positivity”—where we pressure ourselves to feel “happy” no matter what. True gratitude allows us to hold both the good and the bad, creating a fuller, more honest experience of life.

Real-World Example: A Tough Day

Imagine this scenario: You’re juggling too much at work, and nothing seems to go right. A big project has fallen apart at the last minute, a client is unhappy, and on top of it all, you’re feeling physically run-down. By the time you get home, you’re exhausted and discouraged. You sit down, feeling like everything is just too much to handle. The stress is valid, and so is the frustration—this isn’t an easy moment.

Now, challenge yourself to see if there are any positives, however small, that could bring some light to this day. Is there anything in this scenario you could feel grateful for?

Take a moment to think and reflect before reading on.

Examples of Hidden Gratitude:

  • Even during chaos, maybe you have a colleague who helped lighten your workload.
  • Maybe you learned something valuable from the project, even if it didn’t go as planned.
  • The chance to come home and rest could be a small but meaningful relief.

If it’s hard to find positives, here are a few prompts to help guide you. These questions can shift your perspective in stressful situations, offering you a moment of relief and a way to feel more grounded.

Prompts to Find Gratitude During Hard Times:

  1. What’s one small thing I can appreciate right now, even if it’s unrelated to my current stress?
  2. Is there a lesson or strength I’m developing as I work through this challenge?
  3. Who or what in my life is offering support, even if it’s just in a small way?

Remember, it’s okay if gratitude feels challenging at first—this is a practice, and it gets easier with time. Each step you take to find something positive, even in a difficult moment, can help you build resilience and find a bit of light, no matter how small.
