Tips for Setting Goals and Intentions for 2025

Goal Setting vs Intention Setting

Good morning ,

As the new year unfolds, many of us feel pressure to set ambitious goals. While goals can be great for creating structure and motivation, they aren’t the only way to navigate the year ahead. Let’s explore an alternative approach: intention setting.

So, what’s the difference, and how do you choose?

Goals vs. Intentions

  • Goals focus on specific outcomes. Think: “Run a 5K by April” or “Save $5,000 by the end of the year.” They’re measurable, tangible, and action-driven.
  • Intentions focus on how you want to feel or live. They guide your approach rather than setting a fixed destination. Think: “Prioritize my physical health” or “Practice financial mindfulness.”

Which One is Right for You?

You don’t have to choose one over the other! Goals and intentions can work together. For example:

  • Intention: "I want to nurture my creativity."
  • Goal: "I’ll complete one new art project each month."

By pairing an intention with a goal, you give yourself both direction and flexibility.

3 Tips for Intentional Goal-Setting

  1. Start with Your Values
Reflect on what truly matters to you. Do you value connection, growth, or balance? Let these guide your focus for the year.
  2. Be Flexible
Life happens. If a goal feels out of reach, return to your intention. Remember, it’s about progress, not perfection.
  3. Celebrate the Journey
Goals are achieved over time, but intentions can be practiced daily. Take a moment to appreciate how far you’ve come, even if the destination looks different than expected.

Reflection Prompt:
What intention could add meaning to your year? Try journaling this question to explore what truly resonates with you.
